First Ebony Pencil Drawing I've Done in Years

Here's the first ebony pencil drawing I've done in at least 5 or 6 years. I'm trying to see if Asian themed pictures are my niche.

Painting a Crappy Asian Themed Picture

So I'm still struggling with oil painting. I can't find my "voice", my expression, or my style. JFF (just for fun), I decided to paint something with an Asian flair to try to connect to my roots a little. I don't think it turned out very well.

You see in my youth, I was used to doing very detailed work like my drawing of Abraham Lincoln below. Now why in the world would I draw a picture of good ole Abe? Because he has an honest face of course. Technically it's pretty good, if I do say so myself, but as a composition, it's nothing. It's just a portrait of a picture I got from Life magazine.

I feel to grow as an artist. I need to make more interesting, complicated compositions. Something unique that speaks to people. It doesn't have to be super detailed and realistic like honest Abe. Who cares if you can paint or draw something that looks like a photograph? Although you can appreciate someone with those types of skills, it'll never be great art. Besides, the old artists of the past like Rembrandt and Caravaggio already perfected painting realism. Apparently Pablo Picasso could paint realistically very well but it wasn't until he did his abstract stuff that he got famous.

This painting is baby stuff!!!

I'm not going to give up. I just need to create interesting compositions and find a suitable style. To see a few more paintings that I've done click here.

Trying To Teach Myself How to Oil Paint

I didn't paint that much in high school. I mainly drew. If I did paint, I would do so in acrylics. For those of you don't know, acrylics are a much quicker drying paint than say, oils. Acrylics are also a lot less messy. You can wash your brushes with just straight water. Oils, on the other hand, is a very different medium. It requires turpentine, linseed oil, good ventilation, and just a lot of other more difficult techniques.

So I bought a bunch of oil painting stuff and thought I'd just give it a try. Mind you, I'm still trying to work out a style so I'm just painting silly stuff to try to figure out some techniques I like to use.

Here's a painting of a naughty cat that probably ate the canary.

Here's a woman dreaming with her head in a diorama.

Here's a woman with a canary.

I might try something a little more complicated and adult on my next try.

Some Art I Did in High School

Here's me in high school in the year 95 I believe.

Check out that hair, the wispy mustache, and the fake bottom teeth smile I used to employ.

I got first place in drawing for that picture. I showed a lot of promise back then. Of course drawing a picture of Einstein isn't high concept art but I was proud of my technique.

Here are some other drawings I did in high school:

There are parts of me that wishes I pursued an art career. I was very close to switching my degree to an art degree when I found out they only let art majors take the good art classes. Right around that time, the dot com bubble was growing at a torrid pace and I couldn't resist the promise of fortune and fame. They made it sound like anyone with an IS degree was going to be a millionaire. I am no millionaire now but I have a decent job. For all I know, if I pursued an art career I could be broke and living with my parents right now.

I rarely pick up any art supplies these days but I'm trying to get back in the swing of things. I'm trying to teach myself some oil paintings. Check back and see some of the crappy oil paintings I've done. I'm just learning though so be patient.
